Bisa KDei has revealed in an interview that he turned down a payment of GHC 500 offered to him as royalties for his popular tracks, Mansa and Brother Brother.
During an interview on Angel FM, the Highlife artist shared that he received an unexpected call from representatives of the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO).
Upon inquiring about the amount, he was dismayed to hear the figure mentioned. In response, he firmly instructed them to retain the payment and not to contact him again.
”I received a call that I had some royalties to collect when I had brother brother and Mansa.
“I was excited about the news so I asked how much and I was told I had a total of Ghc 500 so I told the official who called me not to call me again,” he told Kumasi-based Angel FM.
GHAMRO serves as a royalties collection agency in Ghana, advocating for the rights of music copyright holders.
Established under section 49 of the Copyright Law, Act 690 of 2005, the agency is responsible for collecting royalties on behalf of all rights owners in the country.
Prior to 2005, this role was fulfilled by the Copyright Society of Ghana. The organization has frequently faced criticism regarding its transparency and stakeholder engagement.
As of 2018, Rex Omar was at the helm of the organization, while Abraham Adjatey, widely known as ‘Agya Abraham,’ currently holds the position of CEO.
