Billboard recently unveiled its ranking of the 25 artists who have defined pop music over the last 25 years, gradually releasing the names in a series of articles.

However, the announcement caused an online frenzy this week when Taylor Swift was named the second-greatest pop star of the 21st century.

Swift’s fans, known as Swifties, flooded social media to express their disappointment, with the hashtag #BillboardIsOverParty trending on X (formerly Twitter).

The backlash was anticipated by Billboard writer Hannah Dailey, who explained the rationale behind Swift’s placement.

While acknowledging Swift’s undeniable global superstardom, Dailey pointed out that her later entry into pop music—after starting her career in country—factored into her ranking. “Considering how much later in the millennium she got her start, both in the genre and music in general,” Dailey noted, Swift’s ranking should still be seen as a major achievement.

Sharing the top 10 with Taylor Swift are Rihanna, Drake, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Adele.
