Being Popular Won’t Make You Rich – M.anifest

Ghanaian rapper Kwame Ametefe Tsikata, popularly known as M.anifest, has carved a niche for himself as one of Africa’s most lyrically gifted and socially conscious artists.

However, in a candid interview with Selikem Acolatse-Apaloo on Bullet TV, M.anifest shed light on the stark realities of the music industry, challenging widespread assumptions about fame and fortune.

“Popularity of a song does not make you rich. There’s no automatic link between being popular and earning money,” M.anifest asserted, dismissing the myth that a hit song guarantees financial success.

The award-winning rapper went on to explain the underlying struggles many musicians face in Ghana and beyond.

“If you release an album and want to tour all 16 regions, there isn’t an established structure to support that. Many of us, myself included, have had to play the role of both artist and entrepreneur to survive,” he revealed.

M.anifest’s words reflect the ongoing challenges in Ghana’s music industry, where infrastructure to support live performances, album distribution, and artist welfare remains underdeveloped.

Unlike in regions with robust entertainment economies, Ghanaian musicians often face difficulties in monetizing their art.

For M.anifest, the path to sustainability has meant wearing multiple hats. From producing his own music to organizing shows and securing partnerships, he has embraced the entrepreneurial side of the business. Yet, he acknowledges this is not an easy road for every artist.

“Not every artist has the capacity or resources to juggle these responsibilities. This is why the industry needs reform to ensure that talent is met with opportunity and fair compensation,” he said.

The rapper’s comments sparked a broader conversation about the need for structured support systems for Ghanaian artists, such as regional touring platforms, better-streaming revenues, and opportunities for international collaborations.
