Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has reiterated his commitment to ensuring that loyal grassroots members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are not left behind if he gets the chance to lead the country.
Speaking to supporters in the Ashanti Region during his presidential primary campaign tour on Friday, Dr. Bawumia promised to introduce a policy that would guarantee every constituency a share of appointments in his government.
He explained that a President typically has the authority to make about 7,000 appointments across international, national, regional, and district levels. If elected, he said, at least one-third of these positions will be decentralised, with each of the country’s 276 constituencies assured a minimum of 10 appointments. Larger constituencies, he added, could receive even more.
“All 275 constituencies in Ghana will have the opportunity to have a representative on various government boards, agencies and other state institutions,” he assured.
This policy, first announced before his election as NPP flagbearer in 2023, is part of his plan to reward loyalty and hard work within the party. Dr. Bawumia noted that the findings of the Mike Oquaye investigative committee, which cited neglect of party grassroots as a key factor in the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections, reinforced his determination to pursue the idea.
“Party members have been saying—and this was captured in the Mike Oquaye report—that when the party wins power, the grassroots are often sidelined. That is why I came up with this policy, which I am more than ever committed to implementing if I win,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia stressed that there are capable men and women in every constituency who deserve opportunities to serve in governance.
“Many constituencies are often neglected, but I strongly believe that guaranteeing each constituency at least 10 appointments is the surest way of ensuring our grassroots members are recognised and rewarded,” he added.
The initiative, he said, would help bridge the gap between party leadership and its base, ensuring that the people who sacrifice their time and energy at the local level also share in the benefits of governance.
