Broadcast journalist and vocal critic of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bridget Otoo has swiftly responded to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent promise to enhance smartphone accessibility for Ghanaians through a credit system.
She emphasized that the proposed policy appears unfeasible and resembles yet another empty promise aimed at deceiving voters, similar to previous occurrences under the current administration.
Taking to Twitter on July 23, 2024, Bridget Otoo expressed her scepticism, highlighting the extended repayment period required at the specified rates.
Furthermore, Bridget is shocked by Bawumia’s apparent desperation, pointing out that in addition to the unlikelihood of his proposal, the Vice President is insulting the intelligence of Ghanaians.
“4500 cedis means it would take 37 years to finish paying. Does it make sense to him? This is not even desperation but just disrespectful to think your voters are stupid,” she posted.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia recently made headlines by promising to increase the availability of smartphones to the people of Ghana if he were to be elected president.
During a campaign event, Dr Bawumia discussed a plan to work with phone manufacturers to offer smartphones on a credit basis, allowing citizens to make monthly payments as low as one or two cedis.
He stressed that this program would greatly improve access to information and communication technology, narrowing the digital divide and empowering more Ghanaians to engage in the digital economy.
This initiative is just one part of a larger strategy aimed at enhancing the technological landscape and promoting economic development.
