The former Minister for Gender, Women, and Children’s Affairs, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has sparked conversations about the future of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, suggesting that even if he does not win in 2024, his political journey should not end there.
Speaking on Asempa FM, she defended Bawumia’s candidacy and drew parallels between his political trajectory and that of former President Nana Akufo-Addo, who had to contest three times before securing victory.
“We will support him. Every person deserves a second chance. Nana Akufo-Addo won the election on the third attempt. People even said that he had been cursed and could not become president, but he became president. So why have we presented a ticket, and you’ll come and say we should not present him again?” she argued.
Her comments indicate that Bawumia’s political career may extend beyond 2024, positioning him as a strong contender for the presidency in 2028 if he falls short in the upcoming elections.
She acknowledged the challenges facing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), admitting that governance had not been kind to the people.
“We know that as a government we were wicked to the Ghanaian people. MPs were targeted when they spoke about the government, but we all know that they were telling the truth,” she stated.
She further pointed to missteps such as the lack of ministerial reshuffles and last-minute dismissals by the president, which she believes contributed to voter apathy.
“Even Prof Mills didn’t win on his first try. There was no reshuffle during the eight years. Government even sacked some persons, and that also affected our base. The last-minute sacking by the president was very useless and that brought about the apathy,” she noted.
With her remarks, Adwoa Safo has subtly set the stage for Bawumia’s long-term political relevance, hinting that if he does not win in 2024, the NPP could rally behind him for 2028.
