A controversy has erupted over Afua Asantewaa’s claim that she received no support from the then government during her Guinness World Record sing-a-thon attempt.
In an interview on Accra FM, Afua stated that apart from a throat medicine provided by the former Vice President, she did not receive any form of assistance from the government.
“I didn’t receive anything from the government. The only thing I got was a medicine to heal my throat and that was from the former Vice President. When he visited me during the performance,” she had said.
Her remarks did not sit well with some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha, who publicly refuted her claims. Taking to Facebook, Mustapha described Afua’s statement as misleading and ungrateful, detailing the government’s support during her first sing-a-thon attempt in Accra.
“This lady is not being truthful and quite ungrateful. In her first Sing-a-thon attempt here in Accra, aside Dr. Bawumia visiting her, which I played a role with Sammi Awuku and Socrates, the Vice President donated 20,000 cash, packs of Papaye food, bottled water and soft drinks to her team.
“I personally made the donation on behalf of Dr. Bawumia to her husband and father. Furthermore, after the event, she and her family came to thank the Vice President, and he further paid for a vacation for her at Senchi,” Mustapha wrote.
Adding to the conversation, Jamaludeen A. Abdullah, a Communications Team member of the NPP and an aide to the former Sports Minister, also debunked Afua’s claims.
He revealed that aside from the Vice President’s contributions, his boss, Mustapha Ussif, donated GHS 20,000 and other items to support her attempt.
“Aside from the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s donation of cash and drinks, my boss Mustapha Ussif also turned up and donated 20k, which I arranged. So what is she talking about? They reached out to our outfit to support another attempt in the US. Let’s not be ungrateful,” he stated.
