In an interview on Angel TV, Ghanaian actor and comedian Big Akwes shared a provocative comment about the people of Kumasi, asserting, “Anyone born and grown up in Kumasi is a scammer; I insist on what I say.”
This bold claim has ignited discussions about trust, reputation, and the challenges faced by communities in the city.

Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, is known for its vibrant culture, bustling markets, and significant historical importance.
However, Big Akwes’s remarks paint a stark picture, suggesting that dishonesty permeates all levels of society, from leaders to everyday citizens, including religious figures.
He pointed specifically to the activities of young men at the Kejetia market, a central hub of commerce, highlighting their alleged involvement in scams targeting unsuspecting individuals.
While his comments might resonate with some who have experienced scams or dishonesty, they also risk perpetuating negative stereotypes about a community that is home to many hardworking and honest individuals.
Generalizing an entire population based on the actions of a few can lead to misunderstandings and further stigmatization.
In addition to his controversial statements about Kumasi, Big Akwes addressed rumours about his personal life, particularly concerning his relationship with his wife Freda. He stated, “I have done nothing to her, and I don’t remember ever marrying her.”

His reluctance to discuss the matter reflects a desire to maintain professionalism, especially as he expressed concern about how these personal issues could impact his international partnerships.
“If you want more details, you should ask Freda, not me,” he suggested, indicating that he prefers to keep certain matters private.
