Reggae artiste Ras Kuuku has called for an overhaul of the gospel music category at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), arguing that eligibility should be based on a song’s message rather than the artiste’s background.
Speaking to Graphic Showbiz, Ras Kuuku emphasized the need for inclusivity, stating, “The gospel music category should be open to all artistes, regardless of their genre or background.
“What defines a gospel song is its lyrical content and message, not the artiste who performs it. Therefore, any song that promotes hope, praises the divine, and maintains a positive message should be eligible for a gospel award at the TGMA.”

He further stressed that the focus should remain on the song’s impact rather than the artiste’s identity. “If there’s a Gospel Song of the Year category, it should recognize the song that best represents the values and spirit of gospel music, regardless of who performs it,” he added.
Citing examples, Ras Kuuku pointed out songs like Aseda by rapper and singer King Paluta, Aseda by the late dancehall/Afrobeats star Ebony Reigns, and his own track Me Mpaebo, arguing that all three carried strong gospel messages but were overlooked due to the artistes’ non-gospel affiliations.
However, according to the TGMA’s official criteria, the Best Gospel Song category is strictly reserved for songs performed by gospel artistes. The criteria state: “Only songs performed by gospel artistes are eligible for this category.”
