Following the viral throwback video of the late gospel musician KODA sharing his harrowing experience with a doctor’s incompetence, many Ghanaians have taken to social media to express their own encounters with medical professionals in Ghana.
Amidst these stories, Hitz FM on-air personality and famed DJ, Andy Disty also shared a heartbreaking incident involving the death of his elder sister due to a nurse’s lack of urgency and unprofessional behaviour.
Andy Dosty explained that his sister was admitted at the Tema General Hospital for an undisclosed ailment. He said when it was time for her medication and injections, the nurse on duty informed him that he had already finished his shift and couldn’t attend to his sister.
He held that despite pleading with the nurse to at least provide the necessary care before leaving, he was met with hostility and refusal. Tragically, this unfortunate situation resulted in the untimely passing of his sister.
“At the Tema General Hospital, my elder sister was admitted there for treatment so I used to visit her a lot. One day, there was a nurse who was supposed to administer medication to her, but he refused, saying he had closed.
I pleaded with him to do it because the next person on duty had not reported yet, but he was adamant not to attend to her. When I left to speak to my sister, the guy left the office. I confronted him [the nurse] on his way home to be sensitive to the situation… The following day, I was in the studio preparing for an interview with Stonebwoy when I was informed my sister had passed away.”
