American actor Andre Braugher was confirmed dead on Monday after a brief illness, as reported by multiple sources. Jennifer Allen, Braugher’s publicist, confirmed the sad news to Variety.
Braugher gained recognition for his portrayal of the upright Captain Raymond Holt in the police procedural comedy series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” from 2013 to 2021. His character’s stoic demeanour, no-nonsense attitude, and underlying humanity quickly made him a beloved figure among fans, especially when paired with Andy Samberg’s energetic Detective Jake Peralta.
In 1998, Braugher received an Emmy for his lead role as Detective Frank Pembleton in NBC’s “Homicide: Life on the Street,” marking his final year on the show.
His intense performance in the critically acclaimed police drama, which was based on the nonfiction book “Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets” by David Simon, Barry Levinson, and Tom Fontana, propelled him to stardom. Additionally, Braugher won another Emmy for his portrayal of a master criminal in FX’s 2006 series “Thief.”
In a 2020 feature article by Variety, Braugher discussed the profound impact of portraying law enforcement officials throughout his career. He highlighted the dangers and problems that arise when police officers resort to breaking the law in the name of upholding it. According to Braugher, this mindset inadvertently normalizes and justifies unlawful actions, saying, “That’s something that we’re going to have to collectively address — all cop shows.”
Braugher, a native of Chicago, completed his education at Stanford University before pursuing his passion for acting at the Juilliard School’s drama division.
His initial foray into the world of screens occurred in the movie “Glory,” where he portrayed Thomas Searles, a free Black man who joins the first Black regiment as a Union soldier. Following this, he took on the role of Kojak’s sidekick in the TV movie revival of “Kojak” before transitioning to the critically acclaimed series “Homicide: Life on the Street.”
From 2002 to 2004, Braugher showcased his versatility by portraying a Detective in the series “Hack” and later took on the role of a psychiatrist in “House, M.D.” His exceptional performances earned him two Primetime Emmy nominations for supporting actor in the series “Men of a Certain Age.”
As his television career flourished, Braugher also made appearances in notable feature films such as “City of Angels,” “Frequency,” “Poseidon,” “Primal Fear,” “Duets,” “The Mist,” “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” “Salt,” and “The Gambler.”
