William Ato Essien, the former CEO of the collapsed Capital Bank, has been granted a presidential pardon by outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Essien, who was sentenced in December 2023 to 15 years in prison for his involvement in the financial disaster, had also been required to pay a hefty GHS 90 million in restitution. However, after partial payments, he fell short of fulfilling the total amount, leading to his imprisonment.
The decision to pardon Essien, which has sparked public discussion, is primarily driven by concerns over his deteriorating health.
The former banker has been battling severe and life-threatening medical conditions, having undergone several surgeries in recent times. His health struggles have prompted calls for a more compassionate response, with many feeling that his physical condition warrants reconsideration of his sentence.
While some applaud the move, others question whether such a pardon is appropriate given the gravity of Essien’s role in Capital Bank’s collapse.
The scandal left significant repercussions on the financial sector, leading critics to argue that accountability should not be overlooked in favour of mercy.
The decision has reignited debate over the balance between justice and compassion, particularly when it comes to influential figures embroiled in major financial misconduct.
