Afua Asantewaa is currently revelling in the excitement of her newfound fame and the drawbacks that come with her skyrocketing reputation, all thanks to her remarkable attempt to secure a Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon.
She says wherever she goes, people now readily identify her, elevating her to the status of a celebrity. Consequently, she finds herself having to navigate through her fans.
To her surprise, Afua was taken aback when she visited Ivory Coast and was recognized by the locals, who cheered her on while she was there to support the Black Stars of Ghana during the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
During an interview with Joy News, Afua expressed how her sing-a-thon endeavor has profoundly transformed her life, particularly the sudden recognition she has garnered both locally and internationally.
“Everywhere I go now I have to tint my car. Even in Ivory Coast, I said, ‘Okay, here I can rest because nobody knows me’ but it was terrible. The Ivorians were equally following up [On her sing-a-thon attempt]. Not just them, because of the World Cup, there were a lot of foreigners.
“So it’s been a bit life-changing in the sense that you’re being recognized easily everywhere I go. Sometimes when I see celebrities, I sit them down and ask them what’s happening. I just want to have an idea. But some tell me yours is even terrible because it’s global,” she said.
Relatedly, Afua Asantewaa revealed on the same platform that she and her team have invested in a priority review for her sing-a-thon. According to her, this special review costs $750 and will be completed within 1–5 days, unlike the standard review that typically takes 12 weeks.
This update comes as a response to numerous inquiries from Ghanaians on social media regarding the delay in processing her evidence for the prestigious title of the individual with the longest singing marathon.
“Because of the popularity of the event, they requested our files. After two weeks of waiting, we requested a priority review. The normal review takes not less or more than 12 weeks. But if you want it quick, you pay an amount of money and they review your file within five working days.
So that’s what we paid for. Officially, it’s $650 but when you are going to pay, you’ll need to pay some transaction fee so we did roughly $750.”
