Shatta Wale has caused a stir once again with some candid comments on the podcast Rants, Bants and Confessions, where he took aim at the Ghanaian music industry’s struggles to produce artists who break out globally.
In a direct comparison with Nigerian musicians, Shatta specifically cited Sarkodie, who he acknowledged has put in tremendous effort, yet remains a step behind international stars like Burna Boy and Wizkid.
“Sarkodie has worked so hard that he should be one of the people on the international market,” Shatta said, clearly recognizing Sarkodie’s undeniable talent and dedication.
Yet, despite these qualities, Shatta lamented that the investments Sarkodie has made seem to have gone unrewarded.
His frustration is palpable as he suggested that Sarkodie could have invested the same money into ventures like malls or filling stations and perhaps found greater rewards, financially speaking.
According to Shatta, this is not an issue unique to Sarkodie but a challenge for many Ghanaian musicians who, he believes, often lack an understanding of the business side of their careers.
The critique became even sharper when Shatta hinted that Sarkodie’s humility may be holding him back, allowing the industry to “use him” without much personal gain.
Shatta’s observations raise a broader issue about the balance between humility and assertiveness in the music business.
He argued that Ghanaian artists often do not realize they are “doing business,” suggesting a gap in how artists see themselves—perhaps more as creators than as entrepreneurs.
This sentiment brings up a broader conversation about the Ghanaian music scene. Despite their talent and hard work, many artists struggle to break into the international spotlight in the way their Nigerian counterparts have.
Nigeria, with its vibrant music infrastructure and marketing machine, has nurtured stars like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido, giving them platforms that reach audiences far beyond Africa.
In contrast, Ghanaian artists often find themselves facing a steeper climb, with limited resources and support systems to propel them forward.
