President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the need for Africa to boost its food production in response to changing global aid dynamics.
Speaking during bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Thursday, he pointed out that U.S. farmers were beginning to raise concerns due to a reduction in food aid programs.
“I was just reading that U.S. farmers are beginning to complain because USAID was the biggest mopper of excess food for food aid to Africa,” Mahama said.

“Now, USAID is not conducting the auctions that used to absorb excess U.S. food, and as a result, American farmers are feeling the impact.”
Despite this shift, the Ghanaian leader believes it presents an opportunity for Africa to invest in its own agricultural sector. “If that aid stops coming, we should make the necessary investments to enhance the productivity of our farmers,” he asserted.
“This will help us establish food security in Africa instead of waiting for USAID handouts to arrive.”
