The Ghana Movie Awards has, for years, been a rare platform recognizing Ghana’s film industry. Despite its potential to elevate the country’s cinematic achievements, the event has been plagued by organizational challenges.
Yet, year after year, it attracts Ghana’s biggest actors and actresses, a testament to its unique place in the industry.
Entertainment pundit Arnold Asamoah Baidoo recently weighed in on the event’s shortcomings during an appearance on UTV’s United Showbiz, urging Fred Nuamah, the organizer, to capitalize on the unwavering support of industry players.
“The main actors and actresses have some love for Fred Nuamah, and so almost every year, the top actors and actresses walk through the awards; an indication that the scheme has goodwill,” Arnold remarked. “But Fred Nuamah is not taking advantage of the goodwill.”
He expressed frustration over the event’s untapped potential, emphasizing how rare it is for an awards scheme to consistently draw the crème de la crème of an industry. According to him, even when the event is poorly organized, the stars show up, sit through it, and celebrate their peers.
“They know that the awards scheme is problematic, but they always show up,” he pointed out.
“So all Fred needs to do is manage the organization very well and capitalize on the goodwill. It is not every award you get the crème de la crème to attend, but almost every year, regardless of how bad it is, they show up, and some of them sit through.”
For many actors, the Ghana Movie Awards is more than just another event—it’s their only opportunity to be publicly celebrated. Unlike the music industry, which boasts platforms like the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), there are no consistent awards schemes for filmmakers.
“There is no award scheme for them, so for one particular event that they would have to dress up, show up on the red carpet, go and sit there, jolly with their friends, and go up and take their awards, that is what they need,” Arnold explained. “Because for the whole year, there is no award that celebrates actors.”
