The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has reportedly refused to eat or drink since his arrest, his lawyer has revealed.
According to his counsel, Enoch Afoakwa, the outspoken politician has embarked on a hunger strike as a form of protest, insisting that his arrest and two-week remand are politically motivated.
“Abronye is naturally full of energy and life, but he believes this is nothing more than political persecution. He remains hopeful that justice will be served and his freedom restored,” Mr Afoakwa told journalists.
The lawyer further explained that beyond the protest, his client’s refusal of food and water is also driven by concerns for his safety in custody.
“Put yourself in his shoes—when you are treated as if you’ve committed a treasonable offence, would you feel safe taking food or water from the same people handling you? He believes this is the best way to protect his life under the circumstances,” he said.
Abronye is facing two charges: publication of false news and offensive conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.
He was first remanded on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, after making his initial court appearance. Prosecutors accuse him of claiming on television that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) held strategic meetings in Akwatia with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in attendance. He is also alleged to have described the current IGP, Tetteh Yohuno, as the “most corrupt” in the country’s history.
Abronye has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to return to court on Friday, September 19, 2025.
