Vybz Kartel, on the Drink Champs podcast monitored by Ghanastreetjournal, shared his love for Afrobeat music and the artists who are currently making waves in the genre. “I love Afrobeat,” he said enthusiastically, naming a few of his favorites, including Tyla with her popular track, and Tems, who recently won a Grammy.

Kartel also praised Wizkid, mentioning their collaborations, and gave a shout-out to Burna Boy, even though they hadn’t worked together.

He also expressed his admiration for Shatta Wale from Ghana, calling him his “bro” and noting how he “came to Freedom Street and smashed the place.”

Kartel explained how powerful African music is, saying, “All of it—hip hop, dancehall, reggae—it’s all black music, African music.” He also reflected on reggae’s influence, explaining that while Afrobeat and reggae are both dominant, reggae’s homage is embedded in its very name—”reggae,” derived from “regga,” which signifies recognition.

Despite this, Kartel acknowledged the power of Nigeria’s music industry, stating that with its large population, it’s understandable that African artists get special attention in spaces like MTV Africa.

Still, he pointed out the undeniable influence Jamaica has had on countries like Nigeria and Ghana, proving that even with Jamaica’s small size, the island’s music culture is globally impactful.

Kartel continued to share his thoughts on the influence of Jamaican music, recalling how he was met with admiration everywhere he went.

“As small as Jamaica is… it still runs,” he said, reflecting on the global reach of Jamaican culture and the respect he receives worldwide. His statement underlined the depth of Jamaica’s musical influence, even on major international platforms.

When the conversation shifted to a quick-fire round, Kartel showed his playful side, tackling questions about famous artists.

He had to choose between Bounty Killer and Buju Banton, admitting, “Fever’s good,” and when asked to choose between Tupac and DMX, he paid his respects to both, acknowledging their impact.
