$2 million, over 1,500 Hands: Film Authority Boss Reveals What Went Into Super Bowl Ad Production in Ghana

Juliet Asante, the Executive Director of the National Film Authority, has unveiled the extensive efforts behind the recent Super Bowl commercial shot in Ghana.

In an interview on TV3 New Day with Berla Mundi, Asante shed light on the production’s impact, highlighting the employment of over 1,500 Ghanaians and the significant economic benefits it brought to the country.

“You look at the recent example that we had, you see that it employed over 1,500 Ghanaians from the NFL? Yes, yes. And over 500 Ghanaians on that production,” she revealed.

She stressed the collaborative nature of the project and addressed the choice of the lead character not being Ghanaian, emphasizing the essence of co-production in international ventures.

Asante also delved into the financial aspects, disclosing that the NFL commercial incurred a cost of approximately $2 million.

She underscored the economic ripple effect within the film sector, elucidating the distribution of value across various industries.

“Well, let me say, without going deep, I would say that it was a little short of 2 million. It’s a small ad, but a little short of $2 million. And that is money that goes to paying people,” she said.

Reflecting on the competitive landscape, Asante emphasized Ghana’s allure as a destination for international production, citing its scenic environment and skilled workforce as pivotal factors.

The Super Bowl commercial, titled “Born to Play,” captivated audiences with its unique setting and uplifting narrative, featuring local talent alongside NFL stars and showcasing the universal aspiration for greatness.

Filmed in multiple locations across Accra, including the vibrant Makola Market, the ad symbolized the boundless potential and dreams that transcend geographical boundaries.
