The Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar has stressed the importance of media responsibility in light of the recent Chef Smith controversy.

She urged the media to verify all information before publishing to prevent potential chaos and embarrassment for the nation.

Madam Abubakar’s concerns stem from reports that Chef Smith, also known as Ebenezer Smith, claimed to have broken a world record for the longest cooking marathon without proper verification.

She emphasised that this incident highlights the need for integrity in the media industry.

During an interview in Accra, the Minister expressed her disappointment in the situation, labelling it as a national embarrassment that should not be overlooked.

She warned that similar misinformation, especially in political contexts like elections, could lead to severe conflicts and chaos within the country.

“The media has the responsibility to verify every information before publication…it’s dangerous to spread falsehood because it could lead us into chaos,” she noted.

What happened?

On July 2, 2024, Chef Smith made headlines by holding a press conference where he proudly declared that he had achieved the title of the longest individual cooking marathon per Guinness World Records (GWR) guidelines.

During the event, he displayed a plaque that he asserted was sent by the record scheme’s organizers, providing evidence to support his assertion.

Nevertheless, there were doubts raised about the authenticity of his claim due to the absence of any official announcement on the GWR website.

Many Ghanaians contended that since GWR had not officially recognized this accomplishment on their platform, Chef Smith’s assertion may be unfounded.

Amidst the uproar caused by this claim, TV3 Ghana, a subsidiary of Media General, reached out to GWR to verify Chef Smith’s statement.

In a message sent directly to TV3 through X, GWR confirmed that the current record holder for the longest individual cooking session is still Alan Fisher from Ireland.

GWR clarified that Chef Smith does not possess the title of the longest cooking marathon and has not been granted any official certificate.
